Having a perfect smile helps boost one’s self confidence. Your smile is the one that carries you around especially on social gatherings. You smile when meeting new people, talking to friends and even when taking pictures with your friends and loved ones.

However, oral health issues such as a missing tooth, stained teeth, or bad breath can diminish one’s confidence in showing their smile. Some people even feel shy in dealing with others because of an imperfect smile. Here are some basic oral hygiene tips that will help you maintain that beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.

Practice Proper Brushing

Brushing doesn’t only involve the teeth but also other parts of the mouth such as the gums and tongue. Be sure to brush all the surfaces of your teeth, both the outer and inner surfaces. When you’re done with the teeth, don’t forget to brush the gums, tongue and inner cheeks to remove bacteria from building up.

Dentists recommend brushing at least twice a day, preferably during mornings and evenings before going to bed. Aside from proper brushing, you should also visit your dentist at least twice a year for a regular dental check-up. Check with the nearest clinic that offers general dentistry practice to help you care for your teeth better.

Don’t Forget to Floss

Brushing alone is not enough. There could be tiny food particles trapped in between teeth which can cause tooth decay if left unattended. These tiny spaces can’t be reached by the bristles of a toothbrush that’s why it is important to floss at least once a day to prevent tooth decay.

Use a Mouthwash

For a complete clean, don’t forget to rinse with a mouthwash to be sure that everything is cleaned even those hard to reach areas of the mouth. Use a mouthwash with fluoride content to help strengthen your teeth and resist damage caused by bacteria in the mouth.

Be Mindful of Your Intake

Aside from proper cleaning procedures, it is also important to watch out what you eat and drink if it has a negative effect on our teeth. For example, crunchy fruits such as apples are good since it helps strengthen the teeth as you munch on it. Dairy products such as milk and cheese are also teeth friendly since they are good sources of calcium, the main mineral needed in keeping teeth strong and healthy.

Aside from choosing teeth friendly foods, you should also avoid foods that are harmful to the teeth. Some examples are sodas and other sugary drinks. Sugar produces an acid build up in the mouth which weakens the tooth enamel, increasing the risk of tooth decay. Sticky and sugary foods such as candies should also be avoided if possible. Their residues can stick and stay in the teeth, weakens that spot and causing dental caries and tooth decay.

It takes effort in preserving that beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. With these simple tips, you can definitely show that perfect smile with confidence.
